Kier/CLV consortium nominated the original Masterplan team for the student accommodation project. The key project driver was the tight construction programme set by the client. This has been the primary catalyst in making major design decisions, such as, the choice of structure and building services solutions in-order to maximise prefabrication opportunities off-site. The sectionalised cladding solution, driven by architectural and air tightness criteria set by Hawkins\Brown and Buro Happold to maximise cost effective early design stage wins associated with energy and carbon emissions performance is also designed for rapid installation.
The buildings are in a high flood risk area. This combined with the challenging requirement to accommodate approximately 200 car parking facilities on-site drove the solution to locate the building on top of a car park podium. Careful design of the car park also enables it to be naturally ventilated. The landscape design has been driven by the need to have natural surface water retention and attenuation.
