Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the Msheireb Downtown Doha project involves an ambitious plan to regenerate part of the city centre of Doha in Qatar in a sustainable way for the 21st century, and Buro Happold is working with client Msheireb Properties and executive architect Gensler to realise this. The combined result will be a mixed use development of 24 buildings, over a 5 storey basement.
The project started with the enabling works in June 2011, which took almost two years to complete. The main works for Phases 2 and 3 started in December 2012 and October 2012 respectively.
The enabling works was a major feat in itself. It involved the installation of 3696 piles and the removal of almost 2m metres³ of soil and rock, resulting in basements up to 23 metres below ground level.
The main construction of both Phases 2 and 3 is now underway, with each contractor pouring up to 30,000 cubic metres of concrete each month to meet the tight delivery programme. Our teams are approving shop drawings and on site works in order to facilitate this, dealing with issues associated with shrinkage of concrete, concreting in hot weather and the building services aspects of the sustainable design. Both sites are effectively road locked meaning that logistics, and their implications on construction, are a real issue for everyone concerned.
The Buro Happold team has a 24 hour presence on site, overseeing all aspects of the construction of this historic project. The pace of work and the high temperatures add to the challenges, but the whole team is focused on delivering Buro Happold's design engineers interpretation of the client's vision; a new city within a city which will be a beacon of urban regeneration for the future of Qatar.
