King Khaled International Airport is located on the north-east of the city of Riyadh and is recognised in the city’s development plan as the greatest opportunity in Riyadh to develop a major cutting edge mixed use employment, institutional and investment area. The site is 25km long and 5km wide so is masterplanning on a city scale.
We brought to the client’s attention the fact that the absence of an overarching infrastructure masterplan could easily lead to the risk of the site being developed on a piecemeal basis with major opportunities for future development being wasted. So we were engaged to create a masterplan for the site which consists of three new universities, a government complex with 120,000 employees, a new hospital, a commercial centre and 300,000 new houses.
Our teams also designed the public transport network to serve the masterplan and link with the planned citywide public transport network.
