Buro Hapoold worked with architects AEDAS on this project to create a new, purpose built secondary school in the Holland Park Conservation Area. The aim was to create a building that “neither looks nor feels like a school”, the new building was designed to accommodate the 1,500 pupils and 100 staff, within a modern, flexible teaching environment, occupying a much smaller footprint than its 1950’s, campus style predecessor. Arranged over 6 levels, the school comprises a single atrium running the full length of the building to create a social hub and carry light deep into the building, with teaching wings on each side.
Holland Park School was one of the first projects in the UK to be delivered fully co-ordinated using BIM software for all disciplines, including MEP, Structures and Architectural packages. Buro Happold then handed the full model over to the main contractor and with our advice permitted the preconstruction periods to be significantly reduced. The benefits of this approach included reduced site queries and resulted in less risk for the client.
All aspects of the school have been designed with long term sustainability in mind. This aspiration to harness the latest in sustainable best practice has lead to the inclusion of a range of sustainable technologies. Combined heat and power was incorporated with the facility to ‘sell’ out of hours heat to a local residential development and provide valuable revenue on behalf of the school.
As the existing school needed to continue operating during construction, a phased construction plan was used with temporary accommodation provided to replace teaching areas requiring early demolition. At the end of this project, the southern part of the old school site will be sold for redevelopment and raise further funds for the council.
