Hamad International Airport

  • New Doha International Airport glass facade
  • New Doha International Airport internal
  • New Doha International Airport under construction

The Hamad International Airport, located in Doha, Qatar, will serve as the official gateway to the Middle East and set the benchmark in airport service standards, efficiency, and passenger convenience. Hamad International Airport, which opened in May 2014, will reportedly handle 50 million passengers, 2 million tons of cargo, and 320,000 aircraft each year. For this project, BuroHappold, collaborating with HOK, provided both base design and structural engineering services of the airport facade systems, skylight glazing systems and a 3,000m2 interior glass chandelier.

With vertical glass facade systems in excess of 25 meters, we incorporated various specialty structures to support both unitized and point -supported glazing systems. Additionally, we provided consulting services on the design and construction of a symbolic Specialty Glazed Mosque Dome structure and a 2700m2 Rain-screen Wall.

The use of horizontal cable, armature truss supports and utilizing dead load rod hangers is a consistent architectural theme throughout the design of the airport, with special systems integrated into the design of the facade including measures for the system to react to the regions harsh environmental conditions and respond accordingly. To analyze the complex range of work, BuroHappold modelled facade systems with a pantheon of tools utilizing non-linear analysis software, parametric design software, visualization software, and a variety of database management tools.

In addition to providing structural and facade engineering, BuroHappold is providing construction management oversight with an on-site presence supervising the construction of the 100,000 square meter curtain wall in the main terminal and concourses as part of the HOK Doha team. Proposed plans for additional concourses and facilities have been slated for the near future.
