Energy cost at US K-12 schools represents the largest single operating expense after salaries and benefits. Developing a plan to help rein in those costs is important to a school’s bottom line and helps to ensure a more sustainable future. Buro Happold, through our G.Works collaboration, partnered with HR&A to provide a full infrastructure, energy and economic analysis for both the Hill and River campuses of Riverdale Country Schools (RCS) located in the Bronx, New York. The result is an energy action plan with strong economic analysis as a foundation for RCS’s infrastructure investments.

This lecture area and dining hall is the latest building project for the Lake Bunyonyi Community School located a remote area of Uganda. Working for the Richard Feilden Foundation and the Happold Trust this simple structure was designed and constructed by Buro Happold with the expert construction help of Charley Brentnall. Utilising locally sourced round pole eucalyptus timber, the structure adopts a 'reciprocal' form of construction for the back to basics design for the roof. The foundations and retaining structures are constructed from a combination of in situ concrete and locally produced handmade bricks.

Buro Hapoold worked with architects AEDAS on this project to create a new, purpose built secondary school in the Holland Park Conservation Area. The aim was to create a building that “neither looks nor feels like a school”, the new building was designed to accommodate the 1,500 pupils and 100 staff, within a modern, flexible teaching environment, occupying a much smaller footprint than its 1950’s, campus style predecessor. Arranged over 6 levels, the school comprises a single atrium running the full length of the building to create a social hub and carry light deep into the building, with teaching wings on each side.
