Sustainability

Situated in the province of Kandahar, Aino Mina is a culturally appropriate suburban development, showing the potential of the emerging Afghan economy and creating over 2,000 new homes.

Built on a gently rising site which backdrops the Friday Mosque against the mountains, it features homes, commercial property, health and leisure facilities, transport networks and more.

Challenge

Buro Happold provided sustainability guidance and analysis for the development, proposing to represent a positive shift in the quality of life in Kandahar.

The vision was to embrace sustainable development of a suburban community through its design, while respecting social, cultural and historical traditions. It also aimed to enhance the physical and ecological attributes of the site, creating a ‘sense of place’, as well as safe and comfortable communities that use natural resources efficiently.

Solution

At the centre of the development lies the park, with a number of water features and a wide pedestrian pathway. This route forms a main artery linking the development’s main functional and residential areas. Four other smaller pathways lead from the central park to local neighbourhoods and facilities, making it possible to walk across the entire site. The park unites the whole development, helping to create a sense of community.

There were a number of core sustainable development objectives in the project. These included creating a flexible and viable development to improve the wellbeing and health of residents. Another key concern for the client was minimising waste and use of resources. We worked within and improved the natural environmental systems, and also provided an integrated transport network.

Value

Aino Mina is an iconic development, setting a precedent for subsequent projects in Afghanistan. Encouraging investment and confidence as the city continues to grow; it is the benchmark for self-sufficient suburban lifestyles in Kandahar.
