A multidisciplinary engineer with a wealth of skills and experience, Stephen is one of Buro Happold’s partners and one of our best building designers. For more than 30 years, his outcome-driven approach has led to a fantastic portfolio of projects for both public sector and private sector clients in the UK and internationally.

Stephen leads our work in the Cultural sector, directing integrated teams of engineers and specialists. Since joining us in 2003, he has contributed significantly to the development of our work, creativity and innovation. He is passionate about creating places for people, ensuring today’s demanding audiences are able to enjoy the visual and performing arts in a range of diverse venues and cultural districts.

Stephen has a strong commitment to collaborating with others and to developing both performance and effectiveness. At Buro Happold he has designed and delivered an impressive range of projects, including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, and Louvre Abu Dhabi. His current projects include The Centre for Music with the City of London and the NG20 Museum in Berlin.

Building on his skills in the Cultural sector, Stephen also works in the Commercial sector, adding value by ensuring health and wellbeing and quality of experience are considered. His work in the Commercial sector currently includes the Mayfield masterplan development in Manchester.

His background in environmental performance and integrated design enables Stephen to lead successful teams across all disciplines. His broad range of skills and experience give him a profound understanding of project lifecycles and process and he influences a project’s strategic development from an early stage.

Stephen’s ability to build strong, lasting client relationships and collaborations combines to powerful effect with his profound technical understanding. He is expert at pre-empting potential challenges in any project. The outcome is reliably stunning and transformative, and it is not surprising that many of his projects have received critical acclaim all around the world.
