Padraic trained as an engineering scientist at Trinity College Dublin and is a Chartered Engineer with more than 30 years designing and delivering infrastructure and buildings for the public and private sectors. He has worked extensively in Middle East, Asia and US as well as UK and lived in the Middle East for 13 years. Following the death of Buro Happolds founding partner, Sir Edmund Happold in 1996 Padraic became the Managing Director leading the growth of the firm from 150 to 1,150 people.

In 2006 Padraic established Happold Consulting, the consulting arm of Buro Happold which advises cities on its strategic planning, economic development and urban regeneration. Currently he is advising the city of Detroit, a city whose population has shrunk by more than 1 million in 50 years and one seeking to find its place in the global economy following the decline of the car industry.  Padraic lectures widely on city issues, is President of Europengineers and co-founded the Working Group on Sustainable Cities at Harvard University.
