Matthew joined Buro Happold in 1999, working initially in Bath before moving to Scotland to head up our structural engineering team in North Europe. Over a ten year period Matthew built a team of structural and civil engineers in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast and Copenhagen, working on major projects including Edinburgh University Potterrow, Edinburgh’s Telford College new Campus; National Museum of Liverpool; Syddansk University Alsion Campus; Danish National Opera House; and the headquarters of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.
In 2009 Matthew moved to Hong Kong to establish our Asia Pacific business. Initially based in Hong Kong, and recently extended to Beijing, the Chinese market in particular is one of our fastest growing areas of business. Recent projects include the West Kowloon Terminus of the Express Rail link from Hong Kong to Guangzhou; Tongshan mixed use development in Shanghai; and the Jin Bao street development in Beijing.
Over his 24 year career, Matthew has worked on a wide variety of civil and structural engineering projects at all scales including projects in water resources, bridges and building structures. His key interests include use of structural timber as a low embodied energy material, and design of sustainable communities, particularly in the context of rapid urbanisation. His background and experience includes work in many sectors and at all scales including theatres and museums; education and commercial buildings; and masterplanning and infrastructure projects.
