Jim is a geotechnical engineer with over 30 years of experience in geotechnical and civil engineering as both a specialist geotechnical contractor and consultant. He has been responsible for carrying out numerous geotechnical and geoevironmental projects in over 20 countries including the UK, Africa and the Middle East where he was resident for10 years. He has also carried out major projects in the Caribbean, USA, CIS States, Asia and Far East.
Over the years, Jim has developed the Buro Happold Ground Engineering Group which has teams in London, Bath and Leeds. The group has a broad ground engineering business base carrying out geotechnical and geoenvironmental assignments for both internal and external clientele. The group carries substantial geotechnical - civil engineering design and construct capabilities undertaking assignments with major contactors providing value added and risk management engineering solutions. Recent projects include Harvard Deep Basement Boston, Glasgow Museum of Transport and Alumina Residue Storage Facilities Jamaica.
Jim is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Fellow of the Geological Society, and Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is a former Chairman of Ground Forum and Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists. Jim is a UK representative on the ISSSMFE for Mega Cities and is also on the EU Panel of Experts for Natural Hazards. Jim was recently elected as Chair of the Panel - for the UK Register of Ground Engineering Professionals (RoGEP) and has been appointed to the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA) Ground Panel.
