Ian Thompson

An acoustic designer with more than twenty years’ experience, Ian joined Buro Happold in 2006 to lead our dedicated Acoustics team.

After starting his career in Southampton as a technician with a consultancy born out of the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, he learnt about the basics of noise and vibration measurement, dynamic modelling of structures, jumping off an oil rig and the art of standing very quietly in fields late at night.

He spent the next twenty years with Arup, developing his abilities and experience in both architectural acoustics and vibration control through international project work with a bias on arts and performance.

Since joining Buro Happold, Ian has led the Acoustics team in their work on many major projects across a range of sectors. He employs a cross-sector approach to work that sees his team’s valuable input applied across a number of our key projects, offering services in conjunction with other Buro Happold disciplines or individually as required.
