Our challenge is to strive to design, make and use buildings and places in a way which inspires the communities they serve, promotes health and wellbeing and uses resources efficiently and intelligently.

Andy Keelin

Andy is a multidisciplinary engineer with a diverse background in providing environmental design and consultancy advice at building, masterplanning and policy levels. He is a partner at Buro Happold and is the global sector leader for commercial development.

Andy led the delivery of major projects in London and overseas, including the London Media City 2012, Refurbishment of the Palace of Westminster, UEL new docklands campus and the KAFD development in Riyadh.

He spent his early career in developing building performance analysis and sustainability tools and has a lifetime interest in closing the gap between the design performance of buildings and the actual performance in use. He has lectured in environmental design and sustainability to architects in Cambridge and the University of Westminster and is a regular contributor to industry events such as Eco build and Open City.

He is passionate about the impact that well designed buildings and places can have on the health and wellbeing of people and the link with this to economic productivity.

He was an early adopter of evidence based design, overseeing Buro Happold’s research and development efforts in London and is currently leading collaboration with Reading University into the link between good building design and productivity. He led the 2013 study for the GLA looking at the energy needs of the capital to 2050 and how these could be met by renewable energy sources and the barriers to implementation.

He is a strong advocate of the power of integrated thinking and how the digital design revolution and big data can be used to bridge the gap between engineering and society to create solutions which have a positive social and economic legacy.
