Matthew specialises in engineering dynamics, vibration and acoustics, and is the Engineering Director of UK Buildings.

He joined the practice in 2014, bringing with him international advisory and consultancy experience in railways, civic buildings, concert and entertainment venues, academic buildings, health and scientific facilities.

In recent years, Matthew has focused on the serviceability issues of buildings involving either high dynamic loads (industrial facilities, gymnasia, seismic and high wind conditions) or requiring low and ultra-low noise and vibration conditions (electron microscopy, semiconductor manufacturing, recording studios, music facilities).

Matthew leads international projects where there is a significant advisory component or where there is a particular need for specialist expertise. Project teams have been drawn from every corner of Buro Happold bringing together a variety of disciplines to solve a specific set of issues for clients who are developing new buildings or improving the performance and utilisation of existing real estate.

In addition, he leads the UK groups providing expertise in acoustics, airport planning, asset consultancy, facade engineering, fire engineering, inclusive design, information management, lighting design, security consultancy, venue performance consultancy, technology, and theatre consultancy.

Matthew has taught dynamics and acoustics engineering to master’s level in three UK universities and has supervised the research of over 80 postgraduate students. He has written one of the standard textbooks on noise and vibration control and is a visiting Professor at Cranfield University. He received an MBE for his work in engineering and education in 2017.
