Karl joined Buro Happold in 2013, bringing with him major airport expansion experience to our aviation sector.

He is a leading specialist in airport MEP and sustainable airport design, with a particular interest in low energy design and using BIM to improve the whole building lifecycle.

With a calm leadership style that encourages collaboration, Karl is able to create a cohesive team and build strong relationships with both architects and clients required to deliver large and complex aviation projects. Coupled with his interdisciplinary knowledge, this skill has earned Karl a well-deserved reputation for efficient delivery of effective airport solutions.

Karl is currently leading two of our aviation projects. One, the billion dollar modernisation of Pittsburgh International Airport in the USA which requires the design of a new terminal to be integrated with the airside. The other, airport planning and security design for a new national airport in Asia, designed to provide exceptional passenger experience and create a much needed new gateway to the country.

In the course of his career, Karl has worked across four continents. He has delivered some of the world’s most innovative aviation projects in the Middle East, Asia and the USA. These include the new Abu Dhabi International Airport – Midfield Terminal, the most sustainable in the Middle East with 3 Pearls Estidama rating. Karl was pivotal in coordinating this ambitious project using BIM, as well as acting as a key interface with the architect and client for the transatlantic delivery team.
