John Swift, a partner and the Global Healthcare, Science and Technology Sector Lead, has more than 25 years of experience in the creation of cutting-edge, sustainably designed facilities.

John has delivered engineering solutions for research, commercial and academic facilities that require effective and reliable infrastructure for the optimization of occupant health, safety and comfort while minimizing energy and water consumption.

A noted expert and leader in sustainable design and efficient building operations, John is recognized as an authority in the profession, helping write standards for the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air- Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the Environmental Protection Agency and the General Services Administration. Lecturing and published widely, recent talks included an I2SL presentation on “Decarbonization of Laboratory Buildings in Cold Climates.” Under Swift’s watch, Buro Happold has been named Engineer of the Year for 2021 by a major Boston industry publication. John also co-wrote Buro Happold’s groundbreaking feasibility study on All-Electric Buildings.

John recently saw the completion of Brown University’s new Engineering Research Center, which includes cutting edge laboratory facilities and sets the benchmark for sustainable laboratory design. Currently, he is working on multiple projects for Alexandria Real Estate in NYC, with WS Development in the Seaport District in Boston, and various projects at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) including the New Museum and the New Music Building.
