The United Arab Emirates is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its formation on the 2nd December, through a series of special events and festivities across the region.

Formed in 1971 the UAE is a federation of seven emirates; Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, Umm al-Quwain and Abu Dhabi, the capital and state's political, industrial and culture centre.
Buro Happold has a long and illustrious history in the Middle East; the consultancy has been working in the area for over 30 years delivering innovation and effective design solutions in the built environment.

Our impact on the emirates has included delivering the first wave of development masterplans in Abu Dhabi which looked at both Saadiyat Island and Sowwah Island. Integral to the Saadiyat Island development plan is the Louvre, Abu Dhabi, the first internationally branded arts facility in the region. A stunning domed museum that will bring together Western and Eastern art under one cutting edge roof, it features innovative cooling solutions and references traditional eastern culture both in design and layout.

Over the years Buro Happold has helped to change the Abu Dhabi skyline with ground-breaking high rise constructions such as the Landmark Tower and the Adia headquarters, combining breathtaking design with pioneering engineering solutions.

In Dubai we have delivered a number of leisure and recreational firsts; the first FIA track in the Dubai auto-drome, and the first significant shopping centre, Burjuman, which has had a marked effect on local shopping patterns and increased access to a wide range of services and facilities.

As the UAE continues to focus on improving its sustainable measures Buro Happold is playing its part by helping to lead the sustainable development of the nation through early adoption of Estidama and leadership within the Emirates Green Building Council.

Buro Happold looks forward to supporting the UAE in the future and adds its voice in celebration of this year’s 40th National Day.
