We are delighted to announce that Paul Westbury, Buro Happold’s Chief Executive, has been recognised for his services to engineering and construction in the 2013 New Year’s Honours list with the award of a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire).
A globally renowned expert in the design and construction of sporting venues, Paul was instrumental in the delivery of the sporting success story of 2012, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, working as part of Team Stadium to create the stunning central Stadium and within the Aecom Consortium to create a Masterplan and design for the Olympic Park and its legacy.
Earlier this year Paul, whose sporting projects also include Dublin’s world class Aviva Stadium and London’s innovative Millennium Dome and its conversion to the O2 Arena, was recognised by the Institution of Structural Engineers and awarded their coveted Gold Medal for a lifetime’s achievement in the field of structural engineering.
Paul commented on his award: “It’s a great honour to have been chosen to receive a CBE for services to engineering and construction.
I would like to thank everyone who has helped me along the way to achieving this and especially those who mentored me when I first set foot in the world of engineering and those at Buro Happold who had faith in my abilities and gave me the space and encouragement to pursue the most exciting of challenges. I have been on an incredible journey that has taken me from the Millennium Dome, the O2 Arena and the Emirates Stadium in London, to the Winter Olympics in Turin, the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, a few places in between, and most recently to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Engineering is a tremendous profession that is improving the world around us on a daily basis and I can not wait to see the many solutions that engineers will doubtless bring to the most difficult future problems that we already know must be solved.”
The Order of the British Empire is an order of Chivalry introduced in 1917 by King George V to reward and highlight good works by individuals. Others honoured for services to the construction industry in this year’s awards include Tony Pidgeley (CBE), Chairman of the Berkeley Group and David Bucknall (OBE), the retired CEO of Rider Levett Bucknall.
Of course 2012 has been a year when there have also been many great athletes rewarded for their achievements including some within the London 2012 Stadium itself, including CBEs for athletes Jessica Ennis, David Weir and Mo Farah. Paul is in great company and we are happy to congratulate him and all the many deserving individuals who have been honoured this year.
