Every other year since 1980 the Venice Architecture Biennale has been featuring the best of international contemporary architecture. This year, for the 13th edition of the Biennale, Buro Happold’s New York and Milan offices are providing pro bono engineering services in support of the US installation in the American Pavilion. The two offices provided both engineering services and the local expertise required to obtain the necessary permits.

The Institute for Urban Design, a non-profit think tank and advocacy group, is organizing the US installation at the Biennale. This year’s theme, Spontaneous Interventions: Design Actions for the Common Good, documents projects initiated by American architects and designers aimed at bringing positive change to the public realm. The installation, conceived by Freecell Architects in New York City, consists of a series of suspended movable banners that interact with the viewing public.

The Biennale runs from August 29 through November 25.
