Buro Happold’s enviable reputation in the Middle East, established over 30 years of delivering cutting edge solutions in the built environment, has been further bolstered at this year’s MEP awards.  The awards showcase the mechanical, electrical and plumbing sector in the UAE, recognising its achievements, honouring individuals and companies, and acknowledging the latest innovations, technology and processes that have helped drive down costs and ensure adherence to best-practice standards.

At this year’s awards Buro Happold was delighted that one of their team, Mike Slessor, was recognised as the ‘Young Engineer of the Year’.  In additional Dr Robert Cooke, Buro Happold Middle East sustainability leader was also highly commended in the ‘Engineer of the Year’ category.

Both Mike and Robert exemplify the core values of Buro Happold with their passion, commitment and genuine enthusiasm for problem solving in the built environment, reflected in their portfolios with their impressive array of project work across the region.  In particular Mike’s work with the UPC in developing policy and guidelines for the Estidama Pearl Rating System proved a deciding factor in his award success. Both colleagues were also recognised for the support that they have given to the Emirates Green Building Council, UPC and to academia.

Slessor, a 25-year-old Cambridge graduate commented “I’m immensely surprised but immensely delighted to win this award. I’ve had a really good year working on a lot of different projects, such as Estidama. I’ve been helping out, writing the code and developing implementations. I’ve also been working on other projects such as design laboratories and media zones – on the technical and policy side,” he added.

Roger Nickells, Middle East Managing Director for Buro Happold, said “We’re extremely proud of both Mike and Roberts’ achievements; they highlight once again that the Middle East market recognises that we have a different approach to design and consultancy and that our people are amongst the best in the industry. We are unashamedly proud of that.”

Robert Okpala, Middle East MEP Director added “Our teams work hard to understand and respect the importance of technology in the performance of building and master-plan assets. We have developed an excellent capability in blending appropriate MEP design with clients’ ambitions. The industry’s recognition of both Mike and Robert shows that our approach is working.”
