Method, the eco-friendly cleaning supply company, is opening its first U.S. manufacturing facility on a 22 acre site in Chicago’s historic Pullman neighborhood. The new 150,000 square foot “green” manufacturing facility is expected to be the nation’s first LEED Platinum certified manufacturing plant in the consumer packaged goods industry.

BuroHappold is providing renewable energy services such as the refurbished 230 foot, 600kW wind turbine combined with solar trees in the parking lot – a feature that will provide a significant amount of the plant’s energy – as well as photovoltaic panels to generate usable electrical power. Method’s new facility will also include solar thermal hot water and daylight harvesting with a functional green roof and urban agriculture to benefit the local community.

The project was designed by William McDonough and Partners with Heitman Architects. Summit Design + Build was chosen as the general contractor for the new precast and steel manufacturing and warehouse facility - which features an 84,000 square foot manufacturing area, a 66,000 square foot distribution space and a 7,000 square foot office mezzanine.

Completion is scheduled for early 2015.
