Two Buro Happold UK projects have tied for first place in the Corporate Workplace category in the North of England heat of the British Council for Offices awards 2013.
Wakefield One and 1 Angel Square were joint winners of the Corporate Workplace award which is open to either a building commissioned by owner-occupiers or where the building has been customised by a developer for the occupier. All entries were judged on the combined merits of base build and fit out.
The judges felt that Wakefield Council's new building, Wakefield One, was a model for a new breed of social responsible public buildings, an exemplar in construction quality, sustainability and value for money.
They added that the building is socially responsible in its use of public funds and provides the council with a symbol of presence and quality. Wakefield One creates an inspiring and welcoming environment sending out a clear message of civic pride and confidence about the future of the district.
The Coop’s new headquarters in Manchester, 1 Angel Square was deemed to be an iconic building which adds magnificently to the city skyline.They felt that the contribution and impact 1 Angel Square has had on its environment is in many way comparable to the effect of iconic buildings such as 30 St Mary's Axe in the City of London. The buildings is a statement regarding The Co-operative Group's progressive ambitions and commitment to sustainability.
