Happy New Year

The Year of the Rabbit has been an exciting one for Buro Happold. We opened the doors of our Beijing office on 1 May 2011, and finally completed the lengthy registration process in October. By the end of 2011 we had our first employees and had even issued our first Fa Piao (those who have done this will appreciate this is something of a milestone!).

Whilst colleagues in Europe and North America eased up during the festive season, we worked through the Christmas period. As the Chinese New Year approaches we can now finally take a breath and join our Chinese colleagues and friends to take time out from mad-cap schedules to spend time with our families (assuming of course they can get a train or a plane or a bus or a car).

Over the last three years, our focus on sustainable urban design and low energy building engineering, supported by the best technology and skills, and a track record of innovation extending over 35 years, has been extremely positively received in Asia, and the market has been strong and has grown fast.

The year of the Dragon may be more challenging. Uncertainty over some parts of the domestic market, and nervousness over the impact of an imploding Eurozone create a backdrop of economic noise. No doubt the China juggernaut will press on. And there is plenty to be excited about: even the moon is in its sights. As the ambitious twelfth Ten Year Plan moves into full swing, upcoming changes in Government may lead to changes of emphasis. There is still a lot to be done to build a modern economy and move literally hundreds of millions of Chinese people into urban areas. Then again, it happens every New Year, so over twenty years it should be relatively straightforward.

Wherever you are over the holiday period, we wish you a very relaxing and peaceful break, and wish you good health and a prosperous new year.

The comment is very interesting. An engineering company has been so much extensive. But an engineer is a user of science primarily, not politician. To be honest, it is like a speech from a leader from Chinese Government.
