Florian Foerster, who is based in Buro Happold´s Berlin office, has been invited to advise on the structural design of the Building Blocks project at the Swedish Embassy in Berlin. The project consists of five 'buildings' designed by 25 pupils from five Berlin schools. The children acted as clients and worked jointly with professional architects and the Swedish construction and property development company NCC during the course of 2012 to develop house designs that address issues and priorities which are often neglected among more mature and aging construction teams.
What does a pet friendly house look like? Does a house really need doors and rooms? What rooms do children need? Valid questions that were explored during a series of workshops, and that will be finally tested during the construction of the full scale houses, which will be built within the grounds of the Nordic embassies, the Felleshus. Construction will start at the end of June 2012 with the grand opening for the public and the young clients on the 9th September 2012.
Building Blocks was originally conceived by the Swedish Centre for Contemporary Arts and Architecture, Färgfabriken and the Designstudio Medium, and has been run twice before with great success; once this year in Stockholm and last year in Oslo.
