Construction of iconic bridge reaches major milestone
Ponte della Musica now spans the Tiber in Rome
The two sides of the Ponte della Musica, a dual purpose pedestrian and public transport bridge, have been connected – representing a major milestone in the construction of the iconic structure.
Designed by international multidisciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold, in collaboration with Powell-Williams Architects, the bridge now connects the Foro Italico and the area of Flaminio.
The 200m span bridge consists of two inclined steel arches carrying a 20m wide steel deck. The arches are supported on concrete piers which incorporate staircases to provide access to leisure facilities on the lower riverbanks.
Buro Happold and Powell-Williams Architects are working with local Italian consultancy C. Lotti & Associati for the client body Dipartimento VI - Politiche della Programmazione e Pianificazione del Territorio - Roma Capitale, U.O. 9 - Qualità
Architettonica and Ufficio Realizzazione Ponti Pedonali sul Tevere.
The bridge will now be fitted out and is due to open in mid 2011.
