International multidisciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold announces that the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington, DC has won a 2011 ENR New York Best Projects Award for engineering excellence in the Office category. This award recognises “creative solutions to project challenges and aesthetic design.” Buro Happold provided structural engineering, MEP engineering, and sustainability consulting for USIP, which opened in March 2011. Safdie Architects designed USIP, which was built by Clark Construction. It is a LEED Gold certified building.
“This award is an acknowledgement by our peers of our creative solutions to complex buildings. The most dramatic features of USIP are its glass and steel roofs that span over two interior atria. We collaborated with the design team to devise a sophisticated system of support for the roofs that achieves the architects’ vision and sustains the day-to-day operations of this global peacemaking organization,” said Craig Schwitter, Managing Director for Buro Happold North America.
The new 150,000-sq.ft USIP headquarters is a national hub for research, prevention, and management of international conflict. In addition to workspaces and a research library, the headquarters includes a state-of-the-art conference centre and a public education centre. It is located prominently on the Washington Mall facing the Lincoln Memorial.
The ENR Best Projects awards are judged by an independent jury of industry leaders in design and construction. The jury uses five main criteria: quality, functionality, safety, innovation, and teamwork. Winning projects from this year’s ENR New York Best Projects of 2011 will be featured in the November 7th edition of ENR New York and will be honoured in New York City on 8 November.
