Consultancy wins regional IStructE award

Buro Happold has won the Yorkshire branch of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Structural Engineering Excellence Award 2011.

The consultancy picked up the award for their work on the new Scunthorpe Sports Centre, which is better known as the Pods due to the five geodesic domes that make up the facility.

Buro Happold designed the building to use direct and diffused light and natural ventilation to minimise the buildings environmental impact, while the water conservation strategy including run-off, grey water, lakes and swales provides a top-up water supply for the irrigation of grass roofs and evaporative cooling. A bio-mass boiler fuelled by local parkland wood chippings and ground-source heat pumps supplements the heating and cooling requirements. The Pods are aiming for a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Comments from the judges included: “The complex geometry of the glued laminated timber beams combined in a triangular arrangement with cylindrical steel nodes to form a series of intersecting domes creates an impressive internal space with a high quality feel. The use of cranked internal steel beams and supporting columns at the dome intersections is a neat and visually simple solution to a challenging geometrical problem. The flowing form of the dome superstructure continues via inclined columns to the raked piled foundations. There is clear evidence of a successful integrated design methodology employed by the structural engineer and the architect to meet the aesthetic and spatial demands of the brief.”

The project also won the Sustainable Building / Development of the Year Award at the Yorkshire Property Industry Awards 2011 earlier this month.
