Buro Happold is celebrating winning a National Certificate of Recognition from the American Institute for Steel (AISC) for their work on Indian Paintbrush Productions studios in Santa Monica, California.
The institute’s annual IDEAS2 awards programme is the highest honour bestowed upon building projects by the structural steel industry in the United States, and conducted annually by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).
The Indian Paintbrush studios are housed in an existing 1950’s warehouse facility which has been refurbished and expanded to include a prominent entry, a new façade with operable panels, a new second floor mezzanine and a decorative split-level stair to give occupants access to a new roof-top terrace.
Buro Happold worked closely with architects, Barton Myers Associates from the onset to determine appropriate structural and MEP interventions to the existing facility to minimise physical impacts and costs while achieving the client’s goals.
Much of the existing structure was salvaged with minimal retrofit required – substantially reducing costs. Buro Happold’s Sustainability Consulting team influenced a number of design features that will improve occupant comfort and reduce long term energy costs. Based on a series of daylight simulations, new skylights have been located across the roof to reduce demand for artificial lighting. Automatic shade screens open and close to control light intensity within the space and reduce solar heat gains. Operable windows provide natural ventilation and exposed concrete floors provide thermal mass to regulate spikes in internal temperature throughout the day.
The project has also received the 2011 Westside Urban Forum Award for office buildings.
