Buro Happold is part of the team chosen to design the European Spallation Source research centre (ESS), Europe’s largest facility for materials research in Lund, Sweden.
After winning an international contest the team – comprising Henning Larsen Architects, COBE, SLA, NNE Pharmaplan, Transsolar, and Buro Happold – will work together with ESS to develop a campus-like concept for the centre. The competition judges commented that the initial design shows “great skill and sensitivity” and that it won because of its approach to flexibility, functionality, and cost.
Colin Carlile, CEO of ESS, said: “The flexibility, human scale and campus-like layout of the work submitted will give us an excellent base for developing a functional and variable work-place suited to the scientists’ everyday needs. Featuring a symbolic building, it will also give dignity and (shine) to reflect the future ESS importance in the European scientific landscape.”
