Last fall, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its plans for the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The announcement represented a significant step towards realizing the organization’s longstanding dream of establishing a state of the art home for its extensive library and archives. Buro Happold recently was honored to join the design team led by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Studio Pali Fekete architects for this new Los Angeles landmark celebrating the Academy’s mission to cultivate and preserve the art of film.
The museum will make its home in the historic May Company department store, an Art Deco building located within the Los Angeles County Museum of Art campus. The project’s complex renovation and expansion will introduce a wide range of facilities.
Our West Coast offices will provide comprehensive services encompassing MEP engineering, structural engineering, facades engineering, and energy modeling and analysis for the project. These integrated services will facilitate the project’s high goals for building performance and overall sustainability, including a minimum target of LEED Gold certification.
David Herd, North America Managing Director commented that “transforming the May Company building into a museum that captures the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ legacy and vision is a wonderfully complex challenge from an integrated engineering viewpoint. It is an honor to collaborate with Renzo Piano and Zoltan Pali—two architects known for producing beauty, clarity and technological innovation—in this endeavor."
