Buro Happold appoints first Sustainability Director
Practice-wide position reflects consultant’s commitment to sustainability
Global multidisciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold has appointed Dan Phillips as its new Sustainability Director.
Dan joins from design and innovation consultancy SEA, which he founded in 1998. His clients included the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Building Research Establishment and Orange Telecommunications which he advised on interdisciplinary projects involving design, marketing, sustainability and new technology.
He authored the book 'The Ecofriendly Home', published by Harper Collins in 2000 and was previously a creative director at Battle McCarthy Consulting Engineers and Landscape Architects, as well as project engineer at Ove Arup and Partners.
Gavin Thompson, Buro Happold’s Managing Director, said: “With the vast majority of our projects being influenced by issues such as population growth, climate change and scarcity of resource, Dan will provide strategic leadership for the development of our skills and expertise in the field of sustainability as it continues to broaden and evolve.”
Dan said: "Engineers understand how design and technology can help deliver a sustainable world, how people and the environment are inextricably linked, and creativity and team work can build better communities. The challenges facing the world demand radical thinking and a genuine desire for change to ensure a safe and prosperous future for the many.”
Dan is a fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
