The first winner of the Buro Happold Better Building 2012 competition has been selected by an international panel of judges.
The competition was set up to promote excellence in design among students and young practitioners with this year’s theme, Building Energy Optimisation, reflecting Buro Happold’s mission to design buildings that don’t cost the earth. The contest attracted a wealth of entries ranging from businesses, industry, academia and media partners. The judges were looking for powerful examples of how to achieve energy efficiency, the feasibility of proposed solutions, quality of calculations and the proposal presentation itself.
Mikołaj Wymoczył, pictured centre left with Buro Happold's Katarzyna Chwalbinska-Kusek and Rafal Schurma, president of the Polish Green Building Council, was announced as the winner during the annual symposium of the Polish Green Building Council. On receiving his prize Mikołaj said “This competition is the first real example of the professional design market taking action to establish links with students and young designers, which is excellent.
"The challenge was to take a real commercial office case study and then apply design in order to reduce the building’s annual energy consumption. Using modern tools such as thermo-modelling allowed me to put sustainability into practice and be a step ahead of the academic theoretical discussion on energy efficiency.” Mikołaj who is an architecture student at Warsaw Technical University will receive an annual IES license and training as a prize for his winning entry.
The competition received a very positive uptake and highlighted the strong desire amongst students and young design practitioners to create and deliver sustainable design. The Better Building Prize initiative has been described within the industry as a great opportunity and something that is much needed. It was supported by IES (Integrated Environmental Solutions), World Green Building Council, Polish Green Building Council, Faculty of Architecture and Faculty of Environmental Engineering, and the magazines Architektura and Builder.
Buro Happold is committed to continuing to support the competition which will be held once again in 2013. More details will be announced soon.
