Buro Happold announces two new partners
New UK and Middle East Partner appointments show consultancy’s commitment to growth
Global multidisciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold has appointed two new partners, Kevin Mitchell and Bill Downie, to expand its existing 48 strong Partnership.
Kevin, who is based in Dubai, is an accomplished building services engineer, with over 20 year’s experience and brings a wealth of multi-disciplinary knowledge gained internationally on a number of high profile projects. Kevin’s focus is the development of innovative building services solutions and their integration within multidisciplinary design. In addition to his appointment to the Partnership, Kevin also takes on a new role as country director for the UAE.
With a well established and loyal client-base Bill is continuing to build on his extensive knowledge of the energy, utilities and infrastructure arena to further establish Buro Happold as a global Energy and Utility Centre of Excellence. Bill is also leading an intuitive study for multi-utility procurement which will acknowledge an attuned awareness of the wider social and environmental impacts of strategic utility infrastructure installation.
The consultancy’s Riyadh based chairman Rod Macdonald said “The Board is extremely pleased to welcome Kevin and Bill, and their wealth of knowledge and experience. Their appointment will further consolidate Buro Happold’s position as a world leader in the delivery of innovative, sustainable buildings and, as a privately owned firm, our ability to shape our own future”.
Chief executive Gavin Thompson echoed Rod’s comment saying “The new appointments will continue to strengthen our long standing presence in the Middle East and also in the energy utilities market which is of significant strategic importance to Buro Happold”.
Current projects involving Buro Happold in the Middle East include the Louvre in Abu Dhabi, King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture, King Abdullah Financial District and Abu Dhabi Media Zone.

Buro Happold is a multi-disciplinary international practice of consulting engineers established in 1976. It offers civil and structural engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, quantity surveying, building services and environmental engineering, health and safety management, infrastructure and traffic engineering, ground engineering, façade engineering, fire engineering, computational fluid dynamics analysis, inclusive design consultancy, project management, urban design and a range of specialist CAD services.
Happold LLP was formed on 1st November 2007. One reason for the change was to improve the way more of its people could share in the consultancy’s success by joining and investing in the Partnership. Happold LLP supersedes the Buro Happold Partnership which was dissolved on 31st October 2007. Ownership of Buro Happold Engineers Limited, together with the group of companies it owns, was transferred to Happold LLP.
Rod Macdonald is the chairman of Happold LLP and Gavin Thompson is the managing director.
