While Friday 13th may not be the most auspicious date, it was cause for celebration in Boston,USA as the North Bank Pedestrian Bridge opened to the public. Cutting the ribbon was Deval Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Buro Happold and Ammann & Whitney collaborated on the design for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

The 640ft bridge surmounted quite a few challenges – crossing over the railway lines leading to North Station and under the Leverett Connector Bridge leading to Leverett Circle and Storrow Drive – to provide a link between Charlestown and Cambridge. The sinusoidal truss design, constructed from hollow steel tubes, is one of three pedestrian crossings planned. Built at a cost of $10M, the pedestrian bridge is part of the multi-billion dollar Central Artery/Tunnel project, one of the most complex highway projects undertaken in the United States.
