Buro Happold’s Milan based Italian office has supported Genoese architect OBR to win first prize in an international design competition. Organised by the Municipality of Genoa the prize is to work on the regeneration of Via XX Settembre, one of the most important street in the city centre.
Buro Happold’s energy and environment team worked with architects OBR and MaDG Studio, landscapers Openfabric and engineers D’Appolonia to create the ‘Living the City in the City’ concept. The aim of the project is to promote a strong sense of urban belonging amongst Genoese residents, encouraging them to play a more active role in their local environment and to help improve urban living conditions.
The plans include prohibiting private vehicles from using Via XX Settembre providing an opportunity for Genoa to create new places to live in this new city within the city area, creating a more pleasant urban environment and revitalising existing functions in the neighbourhood. They also positively encourage community spirit through a series of designated meeting areas that have been defined at key points throughout the neighbourhood and developed across the three themes of Culture/ Information/ Meeting.
