The new Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) has won the coveted Cityscape Abu Dhabi 2012 Award for Best Sustainable Development.

SKMC will be a 750 bed medical complex in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Conceived as 'three hospitals under one roof,' this medical complex will combine a General Hospital, with a level 1 trauma centre, and tertiary Women’s and Paediatric Hospitals - a model that will enhance patient care through specialisation while improving efficiency through shared services.

Combining the flagship healthcare institutions of Abu Dhabi (SKMC and the Corniche Women’s Hospital) under one roof will truly establish the facility as the heart of healthcare in the Emirate.

Envisioned as a 'city within a city', the design endeavours to defy the typical model of a medical centre and create a bustling campus-like environment of distinct character -with vibrant public spaces and a sense of community. More than a medical centre - it is intended as a world-class healthcare destination. Informed by historical regional precedents, the design endeavours to strike a balance as a state of the art vision rooted in local heritage.
