Bread Street office wins regeneration/ conservation award

Buro Happold, the international multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy, has won the Edinburgh Architect’s Conservation/ Regeneration category award for their newly refurbished Edinburgh offices, in the face of stiff local competition.

The consultancy’s Edinburgh team moved into their new office in April 2009 which has been recognised as one of the most sustainable and healthy office projects in the City.

Prior to occupation the building underwent major refurbishment to transform it from a 1900s dilapidated former print works building into a desirable, energy efficient, healthy commercial office building – a vision that the principals of Buro Happold were willing to invest their own money in to achieve. It is hoped that the project will serve as a practical demonstration of urban regeneration as well as identifying the opportunities for improved energy efficiency, sustainability and extending the useful life of existing buildings.

Mark Sidgwick from LDN, the architecture practice that worked with Buro Happold to deliver the refurbishment, collected the award on behalf of the team and said “The main requirement for a good project is a good client and Buro Happold meets that criteria: they’re serious about sustainability and are prepared to put their money where their mouth is!”

The Edinburgh Architecture Awards (EAA) are designed to create a showcase for the Edinburgh Architectural profession to demonstrate its skills and its contribution to the environment and the economy. The EAA highlight the excellent work undertaken within the Chapter Area and by Edinburgh Architects in general.

Buro Happold has also worked on nine of the projects shortlisted for the Scottish design Awards 2010.
