The annual Irish Concrete Society awards took place this weekend at the Conrad Hotel, Dublin. The awards recognise excellence in the design or construction of a completed concrete building, structure or element.
International multidisciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold was appointed as the structural and civil engineer for the Aviva Stadium with a project brief to develop a spectacular new 50,000 seat national stadium on the historic site of Lansdowne Road, the world’s oldest international rugby ground.
The futuristic design consists of four tiers of seating around three sides of the pitch, sweeping down to one level at the north end to minimise the impact on local residents to provide high quality viewing facilities for all spectators while maintaining a sense of connectivity with the city. A network of pedestrian routes and underpasses makes it easier and safer for fans to enter and leave the stadium.
All the seating is protected by a continuous curvilinear roof, which is open above the pitch to provide maximum sunlight to the high performance turf while retaining the unique Lansdowne Road atmosphere.
The Aviva Stadium team consists of:
Lansdowne Road Stadium Development Company
Populous & Scott Tallon Walker Architects
John Sisk and Sons Limited
Major Concrete Supplier:
Kildownet/Banagher/ Techcrete/ Cemex
The Irish concrete Society awards have been running since 1979 and attract a wide range of entries from small and large projects alike. The awards are open to clients, architects, consulting engineers, materials suppliers, contractors or others directly involved with the nominated project and must refer to completed work, located in Ireland.
