Shovels were driven into the ground on Monday May 19, to signify the start of the new $1.2 billion multipurpose Atlanta Falcons Stadium set to open in 2017. BuroHappold, selected by 360 Architecture as structural engineers for the 1.8 million square foot iconic sports and entertainment complex has engineered a first-of-its-kind oculus shaped roof that opens like the shutter of a camera, creating a maximum opening of 100,000 square feet. The design is the most innovative roof to be unveiled for a major sports facility in decades.

Along with a display of fireworks and bursting fire balls, Falcons and MLS Atlanta Owner Arthur Blank together with representatives from the NFL, Major League Soccer, the City and State dug their shovels into the ground in a symbolic gesture of history made. Also in attendance was project director, Erleen Hatfield, and lead architect Bill Johnson of 360 Architecture. This progressive and cutting edge complex is designed to attract world class sports, civic, cultural, and commercial events and serve as a landmark for the city of Atlanta.
