New photos released of iconic ‘Khan Shatyry entertainment centre’

Foster + Partners and Buro Happold have released photos of the Khan Shatyry entertainment centre, which is set to become a civic focal point as well as the tallest structure in Kazakhstan’s capital city, Astana.

When the project is completed this summer a tropical park will step up in terraces to the highest part of the 100,000m² building, providing public spaces and green oases. Roof lights will illuminate wave pools, a river and waterfall. The highest terrace will also feature a weaving deck that will afford visitors dramatic views across the park.

Inside the centre and at its core there will be an open space that will be large enough to host events and exhibitions. The space will form the cultural hub of the complex. The centre will also house 40,000m² of retail space, cafes and restaurants.

Foster + Partners and Buro Happold were appointed by design and build contractor Sembol (Sml Construction) in late 2006 to jointly deliver the concept and the scheme design, following which they supported the detailed design undertaken by specialist sub consultants.

Project partners comprise Sembol (Sml Construction) (design and build contractor), Foster + Partners (architect), Buro Happold (structural engineer), Vector Foiltec (ETFE fabric manufacturer), Montage Services (cable net manufacturer) and Samko (steelwork manufacturer).
