Rail is changing. The future of rail is dependent on doing things better; lower cost, lower energy, higher efficiency. At Buro Happold, we can help you achieve this change using our broad range of experience, diverse mix of engineering specialisms and flexible, innovative approach.

Be it the design of stations, such as those in the Haramain High-Speed Rail linking Mecca and Medina, bridges, buildings such as the new Astana station, coastal defences or any other structure within a railway environment. You can be certain that we will strive for the best possible design, operational standards and ease of maintenance.

People movementfire engineering and disability access requirements will always be considered as part of an integrated rail design, as will comprehensive safety auditing and remedial engineering. Carbon emissions are also a key area Buro Happold focuses on, helping each client develop sustainable modes of travel and an efficient transport hub and promoting planning that reduces the need for travel.

A well-executed rail hub is key to unlocking the potential and value of any new development within the built environment, especially the opportunities around masterplanning the cities of the future. It is also key to re-creating thriving economies and communities when focusing on the regeneration of existing urban environments in the UK and worldwide.

Our specialist rail services include

Project Highlights

Northern Line Extension, London

Connecting communities and businesses across South West London

Stretching from Kennington to Battersea, the £1 billion Northern Line Extension will provide a fast, high capacity transport link across the southwest of London. This project underpins the wider regeneration of the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea area, which will create 16,000 new homes and 25,000 new jobs. Two new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station will be built to serve these businesses and communities.

Buro Happold is working concurrently on the Battersea Power Station redevelopment and liaising with team members across each project to coordinate schedules and ensure the NLE station is operational prior to occupation of the Power Station, in line with planning requirements.

Riyadh Metro

Delivering the first public transport system for residents of Riyadh

Riyadh boasts a population of over 6 million, and this number is expected to double by 2035. To accommodate this growth, the city is set to open the Riyadh Metro system in 2019. This is the biggest urban mass transit system that’s ever been created from scratch, and will connect the people of Riyadh via six metro lines, running through 85 stations, and spanning nearly 110 miles of track. Buro Happold is delivering two of the three stations across the line that feature iconic architecture and design.

The King Abdullah Financial District station forms one of 8 stations and 1 transit hub on the Yellow line.
