Geoenvironmental

Utilising brownfield sites is fundamental to the delivery of safe and sustainable development. Accordingly, the rise in urban regeneration schemes and recognition of the need to conserve green spaces in towns and city centres means that many developments are now situated on old industrial brownfield sites. With this transition come special challenges such as cost, risk and potential liability, but also opportunities for bringing derelict land back into beneficial use, remediating contamination and enhancing the environment.

Buro Happold’s geoenvironmental team has extensive experience working with contaminated land, impacted waters and in identifying and resolving technical issues that arise on sites during development. Our team understands the commercial and technical issues of land contamination and has a proven track record of successful project delivery related to requirements under planning (PPS23) as well as potential liability under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act. Our expertise covers all technical disciplines and spans all phases from initial due diligence, intrusive investigation, assessment and remedial design, through to final verification.

It should be a buoyant area. All the major businesses together with new players have plans for expansion. Instead it is suffering from a declining working-age population and increasing proportion of elderly residents.
