Buro Happold took the important decision in 2008 to add a presence in China. Our Hong Kong office was the first step. Our unique approach to delivering holistic, sustainable and multi-disciplinary engineering and consultancy has been well received. And we have now expanded into mainland China with our Beijing office opening in Summer 2011 and plans for a Shanghai branch office to follow in 2012.
Rapid commercial development and the proliferation of high rise buildings is leading to significant opportunities to apply our core skills in Tall Buildings and Seismic Design.
In addition, the rapid growth in an urban middle class is leading to a surge in demand for culture and sport venues. Our experience in this sector from projects such as the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the British Museum is world class and we are well positioned to serve this market from our new China base.
Our plans in China are developing quickly as more and more opportunities arise. Our medium term plan is to have network of offices across China to be able to respond quickly to clients' needs, and develop local knowledge and experience.
