The I25 Express Lanes in Denver were originally built as seven miles of HOV and Rapid Bus Transit lanes between downtown Denver and the US36.
In June 2006 they opened to traffic as express lanes which means that solo drivers are now also allowed to use the HOV lanes if they pay a toll. The lanes have proved very popular and there are now plans to extend the scheme along the US36 to Boulder. Although the construction of Phase I of the US36 is already underway, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDoT) and the High Performance Transportation Enterprise (HPTE) have proposed that the Phase II extension along the US36, along with Phase I and the existing I25 express lanes, should be combined into a single design, build, finance and operate concession.
