People movement

Free uncongested movement of people within built and urban spaces is not only an issue of safety and security, but also of comfort and visitor experience. The building and urban circulation design and management have a direct impact on the visitor experience. The aim of people movement consultancy is to develop designs that are vibrant, comfortable, accessible, safe, secure, and work with the minimum of operational intervention.

Our people movement modelling and consultancy services helps architects, transport planners, airport planners, urban designers, regulators, developers, fire engineers and security advisors to understand and optimise space layout designs and operational management strategies.

Our consultants are highly skilled in optimising the design of spaces. By forecasting activity patterns throughout the design, our consultants can optimise the provision of routes, entrances, exits and stairways to improve ease of circulation and mitigate against congestion risks.

Our vast experience covers a diverse range of sectors: education (e.g. Thoma s Deacon Academy), cultural (e.g. Expo City Cairo), sports (e.g. Ascot Racecourse), rail (e.g. Makkah-Medina high speed rail link), aviations (e.g. London City Airport), and urban (e.g. Makkah Pedestrian Corridors).

By using sophisticated in-house and commercial modelling tools we have developed a modern approach to the circulation design of built and urban spaces. This is also instrumental in gaining planning approval for new buildings and refurbishments.

As ever with Buro Happold, we approach our work with creativity and innovation – achieving design excellence with the minimum of post-completion operational intervention.
