Acoustics

Acoustics is integral to the successful design and ‘experience’ of a building. There is plenty of compelling evidence to show that the internal environment affects human health, communication and productivity.  Addressing the acoustic ambience has become more important now we have densely populated offices and mixed-use complexes – as well as more stringent planning regulations.

The huge array of noises that surround us often go unnoticed until they hinder our ability to concentrate or detract from the enjoyment of our surroundings. Buro Happold’s specialist acoustic consultancy team applies its skills to create positive human perceptions of space. We offer engineering-led consultancy based on understanding of how individuals experience the acoustic world they inhabit and the way this relates to the built environment.

Our project experience covers a range of acoustic environments, from commercial spaces such as offices, hotels and shopping centres to public spaces such as galleries, theatres and museums. Requirements vary depending on the building use: in school classrooms, for example, teacher/pupil speech intelligibility is vital; while in retail outlets, good lighting and acoustics can have a positive effect on buying habits.

We adopt a creative and innovative approach to acoustic design. As multi-disciplinary consultants, Buro Happold’s clients benefit from our wealth of knowledge across all aspects of building design. Our expertise enables us to provide a unique range of acoustic services covering all aspects of planning advice, architectural and building services acoustics advice, electro-acoustic systems design, environmental noise and vibration assessments, surveying and acoustic performance testing.
