Moveable Bridges

Moveable bridges are used over navigable waterways when it is impractical or uneconomic to build a ‘fixed’ bridge with enough vertical clearance to allow the passage of shipping. The designs can range from small pedestrian footbridges over canals to large structures (usually lift or swing bridges) over rivers that can be opened either by raising the decks or by rotating the whole structure.

The form of a moveable bridge is often governed by operational issues, such as how often the bridge needs to be opened and whether it needs trained staff to operate it. Buro Happold carries out a detailed assessment of the different options, looking at the nature of the site, the operating systems, the economics of the project, maintenance requirements and safety procedures.

We are firmly established as one of the industry’s leading experts in bridge design. Our dedicated bridge engineering team provides comprehensive technical advice to architects, contractors, local authorities, the Highways Agency and other professionals. Understanding the unique challenges involved, we are able to progress a project from concept to construction, ensuring the design complies with local and national planning regulations.
