Lighting Design

Buro Happold's Lighting Design team provides a dedicated, fully integrated lighting design consultancy for projects requiring specialised lighting strategies. Our lighting engineers and lighting designers work in partnership to deliver effective, appropriate and creative lighting solutions across a wide range of projects.

Light is a key component of the built environment. It is a key factor in dictating the appearance and functionality of a building and its surrounding landscape. An integral part of the architecture, it needs to satisfy both our client’s aspirations and the designer’s vision, delivering clear practical business benefits while enhancing the building’s aesthetic appeal and ‘ambience’.

By being involved in a project from the outset, we are able to inform and influence the design to ensure it fulfils our clients’ specific lighting requirements. Following the creation of concept sketch designs, we employ the latest 3D modelling technology to demonstrate a variety of lighting scenarios, including material specifications and likely cost. In this way we can obtain early approval of the lighting plan.

Changing regulations, energy savings and more intricate building forms are just some of the challenges we address. Our lighting analysis enables us to examine in detail what impact changes to elements such as the façade and the lighting control system can have on lighting levels.

Buro Happold’s lighting team are experts in understanding and analysing the ‘quantity’ and ‘quality’ of natural and artificial light, both internally within the building and externally. Research shows that light can have a powerful effect on productivity, by enhancing the performance and wellbeing of a building’s occupants. Through our technical understanding, we’ll help you get the best from this vital resource.
