Energy Consultancy

Growing environmental concerns and the steady rise in fuel prices have made energy efficiency a key issue for many organisations. Enforcement of the Kyoto Agreement and the introduction of policies such as the climate change levy, carbon emissions trading, Part L of the building regulations and the energy performance of buildings directive have put the focus firmly on energy conservation, sustainable development and renewable energy sources.

Buro Happold is at the leading edge of design for low energy, high performance buildings and systems. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team of structural, civil and façade engineers, our energy consultants offer expert strategic advice on energy planning and policy, infrastructure design, energy procurement, alternative energy options and meeting sustainability goals. Our integrated, holistic approach helps to secure regulatory approval and reduce running costs without impacting on clients’ aspirations.

We use 3D thermal dynamic modelling to analyse the ‘comfort’ and energy consumption of a building, using proven systems such as BREEAM for assessing environmental impact, and analyse the effect of energy costs on the whole life costing. The façade is a critical factor in achieving energy efficiency – external shading systems provide natural warmth, light and ventilation, so reducing the dependence on costly heating and air conditioning.

After construction, we can carry out a range of post-occupancy energy audits, surveys and monitoring studies that assess performance and identify wastage. We evaluate operational conditions and put in place procedures to ensure plant and systems are maintained and set up to maximise energy efficiency, including ‘through-life’ commissioning and risk-based maintenance strategies.
