Sustainable Design

Sustainable engineering is now firmly established as an integral process within the design, construction and operation of most new building developments, underlying all disciplines involved in a project. Incorporating the latest energy-saving building services technologies and recycling systems, Buro Happold’s elegant and thoughtfully designed buildings set a new benchmark for environmental performance.

Meeting sustainability targets is now a key regulatory requirement – and one that is likely to become more significant in the future. As pioneers in the field we play a vital role in enabling clients to procure buildings that are ‘environmentally responsible’. After analysing the environmental ‘behaviour’ of the structure using advanced 3D modelling techniques we are able to evaluate the sustainability of the design choices using recognised rating systems such as BREEAM and LEED.

Our practical, integrated building services solutions create a balanced and energy-efficient internal environment. Our designs make extensive use of passive energy control methods:  advanced low-energy façade designs, external shading systems and natural ventilation improve comfort levels while saving on heating and air conditioning costs. The use of renewable sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaic cells further reduces emissions and energy consumption.

As pioneers in the design of low-energy, high performance buildings and systems, Buro Happold fully supports the high priority now given to sustainability and welcomes the challenges this presents.  We are recognised throughout the industry as a being at the forefront of sustainable design for the built environment. As a consultancy it is a way of thinking that we encourage and promote across all our engineering disciplines.
